Inger Bremvik is a Director Life4Kids in Kenya and a member of the Life4Kids organization in Norway. She recently visited the Life4Kids home in Kenya and sent this report:
It has been a great joy to visit Life4Kids. When I was there some of the boys above 18 came to visit. I met Brian, Patrick, Jackson, Kennedy and Makanda. Brian is in university, and when he visited, he helped the younger boys to work on the computers (see picture). Jackson has completed his education as a caregiver, and he is now looking for a job. We also celebrated Patrick who has completed college education. Kennedy was very sad, because he had just lost his mother, but he was pleased with his motorcycle and working as a driver. Meeting Makanda and talking to him was very special. I remember how damaged he was when he came to Life4Kids, 5 years old. Now he is 19, and he is in form 3. He said about himself: ” I am changed now. I am a good boy now.” Seeing him was like watching a miracle boy. He is really transformed!
At the end of August 13 boys were sent off to High School and Junior High School, to boarding schools. They are from grade 7 to grade 12. A lot of personal equipment was bought and given out to each of them, school materials and personal things.
I really enjoyed seeing the small kids also. The new youngest boys all look very happy and well adjusted to life in the home. They are full of energy, but well behaved.
It is amazing to see all the boys who live in the home all the time now; they are well behaved; they play together inside and outside. Every day when they come home from school, they do their homework sitting by the tables under the large tree inside the compound. When all homework is done, they receive a snack, and they prepare and fold the clothes they shall wear the next day, so that everything is ready the next morning. They also wash some of their clothes, like socks, just to learn how to wash their clothes by hand. And then there is time to play and watch TV before dinner time.
The boys are also very proud of and happy with the garden.
I am very much impressed to see the harmony in the home, the good behaviour of the boys and the love and care of the staff. The home has two new staff members, Benta, who is a cook, and Samuel, who is a guard. The staff is really doing a wonderful job. There is such a peaceful and good atmosphere at the dinner table every evening. Each one of the boys is doing his different tasks without protest or quarrelling.
Of course, there are some small conflicts between the children, but the staff solve this quite quickly. The staff always talk quietly to the children; they do not raise their voices.
We can really trust that Life4Kids is a high-quality home.
